Application and Prospect on Metabolomics and Lipidomics in Asthma

  • Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory airway disease, usually characterized by the history of respiratory symptoms such as wheeze, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath that vary over time and in intensity. The pathogenesis of asthma is complex and heterogeneous, which makes it difficult to diagnose and treat. Metabolomics and lipidomics can explore the pathogenesis of asthma and guide the diagnosis and treatment from the level of small molecule metabolites and metabolic pathways. Furthermore, metabolomics and lipidomics are in line with the Chinese medicine overall observation theory. They are promising laboratory tools for the study of the standardization and objectivity of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndromes, thus metabolomics and lipidomics can potentially provide useful information for the feasibility of TCM treatment. This paper reviews the application of metabolomics and lipidomics to provide new ideas for the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of asthma by discovering various biomarkers and perturbed pathways in recent years.
