A Comment on Chapter on Cholera in Treatise on Cold - induced Febrile Diseases
GU Wu-jun
2005, 21(4): 212-215.
Abstract:
The author believes that the reason why in Treatise on Cold - induced Febrile Diseases the treatment of cholera was not included in the diseases of the six meridians is for syndrome classification. Cholera described in Treatise on Cold - induced Febrile Diseases belongs to damp cholera that is deficient and cold in nature, with exterior syndromes at the onset. "Heat" used in the book refers to the symptom of fever, not the nature of the disease. The author also makes some comment on the treatment of other diseases.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of Quyu Xiaoban Capsule on blood lipid, nitrogen oxide (NO), endothelin 1 (ET - 1) and the function of endothelium in patients with artherosclerosis (AS). METHOD 80 patients were divided randomly into an experiment group and a control group, who were given ultrasonic examination on endothelium function and determination of the levels of blood lipid, NO and ET - 1. RESULT After the treatment, the levels of TC and LDL - C in the experiment group dropped markedly, with LDL- C level significantly lower than the control group. In the experiment group, NO level rose compared with the control group and ET - 1 level dropped markedly ( P < 0.05) . CONCLUSION Quyu Xiaoban Capsule can markedly reduce blood lipid level, prevent NO/ET - 1 imbalance and improve the diastole function of dependent blood vessels.

2005, 21(4): 226-227.
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To observe the content of hypersensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) in the serum of patients with stable and unstable angina pectoris and the effect of drug intervention. METHOD ELISA method was used to detect hsCRP level of 60 patients with stable and unstable angina pectoris, and those with unstable angina pectoris were divided into a treatment group of 17 patients treated with the Chinese medicine Tongxinluo Capsule as well as western medicine, and a control group of another 17 patients treated only with western medicine. The patients were treated for 8 weeks. RESULT The hsCRP level of those with unstable angina pectoris was markedly higher than those with stable angina pectoris( P < 0.01). In the treatment group, hsCRP level was improved markedly as compared with the level before the treatment( P < 0.01), with significant difference from the control group after the treatment ( P < 0.01) . CONCLUSION The rise of hsCRP level is an indicator for the change of the disease conditions of those with unstable angina pectoris, and Tongxinluo Capsule can relieve the attack of angina pectoris by improving CRP level.

2005, 21(4): 228-230.
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of Lizhi Sanjie Pill on the levels of estrogen (ER) and progestin (PR) of hys teromyoma patients. METHOD Immunohistochemical method was used to detect ER and PR levels of hysteromyoma and myometrium of 15 patients who had taken exclusively Lizhi Sanjie Pill for three months and had received surgery, compared with another 15 patients who had not taken the pill but also had received surgery. RESULT The ER and PR levels of hysteromyoma were higher than those of myometrium ( P < 0.05) and the ER and PR levels in the control group were markedly higher than those in the treatment group (P< 0. 05). CONCLUSION The reduction of the ER and PR levels is probably one of the main mechanisms of Lizhi Sanjie Pill in the treatment of hysteromyoma.

2005, 21(4): 231-233.
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate into the regulating effect of Neiyi Recipe on reproductive endocrinology in endometriosis. METHOD Endometriosis rat models and pseudo - surgery models were established and radioimmunoassay was used to examine the levels of blood E2, hypothalamus GnRH, pituitary body LH and PRL and peripheral blood E2. RESULT The ectopic focus weight in the treatment group was markedly lower than the non - treatment group ( P < 0.05 ) . The hypothalamus GnRH content in the non - treatment group was markedly lower than the pseudo- surgery group and the treatment group ( P < 0.05) . The contents of peripheral blood E2 and Pituitary body PRL were markedly lower than the non - treatment group ( P < 0.05) . CONCLUSION Neiyi Recipe can regulate reproductive endocrinology through hypothalamus - pituitary gland - ovary axis.

2005, 21(4): 243-244.
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate into the screening of the active components of Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae. METHOD Extraction and isolation were performed on Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae to obtain 70% alcohol extract, total alkaloids and total flavonoids, which were then used in diabetes mice models made with alloxan to observe their effect in increasing the blood sugar of mice. RESULT Antagonizing effect against the increase of blood sugar was found in the alcohol extraction group and total alkaloids group, with marked significance ( P < 0.05; P < 0.01) . No marked effect was detected in the total flavonoids group ( P > 0.05 ). CONCLUSION The active components in Plumula Nelumbinis Nuciferae for lowering blood sugar are alkaloids, not flavonoids.

2005, 21(4): 253-254.
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate into the anti - tumor effect of total alkaloids of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis . METHOD Overall observation on the effect of the total alkaloids of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis was made by establish S180, H22 and ESC mice tumor models. RESULT The total alkaloids of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis had anti - tumor effect, but the tumor- inhibiting rate was low with great toxicity. CONCLUSION It is still questionable to use the total alkaloids of Radix Sophorae Tonkinensis as an anti - tumor agent.

2005, 21(4): 255-257.
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE To investigate into the effect of Lirukang Liquid on the morphology of mammary gland, uterus and ovary of models with hyperplasia of mammary gland. METHOD Light microscope and image analyzer were used to calculate the area of cell glandular cavity, matrix and cell nucleus before and after drug administration, and the morphological changes in the uterus and ovary. RESULT (1) Lirukang Liquid had marked effect of dispersing and treating dilation of mammary gland cavity, matrix edema and enlargement of cell nucleus; (2) Lirukang Liquid could relieve the pathological changes in the uterus and ovary of the models. CONCLUSION In treating hyperplasia of mammary gland, Chinese drugs not only change the local pathological hyperplasia, but also improve the pathological morphology of the uterus and ovary, the mechanisms of which is probably due to the effect of regulating the function of hypothalamus - pituitary body - ovary gonad axis.
